The Healthiest Thing You Can Do Right Now
I remember when I was really struggling with food, I used to weigh myself every morning. If I was happy with the number, I felt such a great sense of accomplishment. I went on with my day, but food was always in the back of my mind. “Can’t lose control or I’ll gain weight”. If I was not happy with the number or if I had gained weight from the previous day, my day was ruined. I felt like a failure. I felt so much shame, and I felt discouraged because I felt like I was sacrificing so much and working so hard toward my goal weight. The number I saw dictated how many calories I was allowed to eat. Sometimes I stuck with it, sometimes I lost control and binged.
Where did that goal weight even come from? Who knows. I created it for myself. Decided that I was only worthy when I weighed that number, or less. I didn’t know it then, but I now know that I wasn’t born with the fear of gaining weight. It came from diet culture.
My experience might resonate with you and it might sound familiar to you on some level. After speaking with so many women, I know that I am not alone in having had struggles with food and maybe this is your current situation.
My healing involved many steps, which I now take my clients through in my programs, but there’s one thing that I want to share with you and made a huge difference for me and many of the women that I’ve worked with.
Transformation and habit change involves both behavior change and mindset. The mindset piece is really important because our mindset and our beliefs are what guide our behaviors.
The most important thing that I needed to release was my fixation on my weight. Perhaps when you read this, it brings up fear. “What if I gain weight” “How will I stay in control” “What about my health?” Everyone moves at their own pace and I totally understand that fear and hesitation.
There are a few reasons why the fixation on your weight isn’t serving you.
Have you ever heard that stress can affect your health negatively? Constant fixation on your weight is stress on the body. You’re constantly worried about what you’re going to eat, when and how much. You have negative emotions concerning your weight or your body. This produces a stress response in your body and activates your sympathetic nervous system. This is your fight or flight response! Even being in this place at a constant low level can impact digestion, metabolism, and generally just wreak havoc on your body. Not fun.
Another reason why the fixation on your weight isn’t serving you is that it disconnects you from your body. The number on the scale is external feedback. When you change what you’re eating to lose weight, you’re doing so from external feedback. The more you rely on external feedback, the more disconnected from your body you become.
Your body is giving you signals all the time about what it needs, how much, and when. You can get good at listening when you are connected to your body. The more connected with your body you are, the more you are able to effortlessly follow health promoting behaviors, regardless of your size. That means you will feel happier and healthier.
Did you know that you don’t actually have to lose weight or be under a certain weight to be healthy? Health is more about your behaviors than your weight, and adding health-promoting behaviors into your lifestyle WILL have a positive impact on your health- whether or not you lose weight. How liberating right?
